Some citizens of Washington County may qualify for a state funded property tax relief program.
“For some segments of our local population, property taxes can be a financial burden,” said Trustee Rick Storey. “The Tax Relief Program began in 1973 and provides property tax relief for qualified elderly and disabled homeowners, as well as disabled veteran homeowners or their surviving spouses. This is a state program funded by appropriations authorized by the General Assembly. Washington County matches up to the state amount, not to exceed the billed amount.” According to Storey, in the most recent budget year, those who made $33,460 and if you were 65 or older or disabled qualified for relief. Veterans with 100% disability qualify. Storey says if the veteran passes away, the property tax relief passes on to the surviving spouse. Required Documents The Trustee’s office requires the following documents in order to assist homeowners applying for tax relief. Anyone applying for tax relief must bring:
• Driver’s license
• Medicare card
• Proof of income for the previous tax year
• Social Security card
“The state will provide income threshold jurisdiction to the Trustee’s office in November,” Storey said. “Washington County matches the amount up to the state of Tennessee tax refund.”
Residents who think they may qualify should check with the Trustee’s office in November when thresholds will be available.
