Washington County residents need to be on the lookout for an important envelope coming to their mailbox soon. It is the assessment change notice from Washington County Property Assessor Robbie McGuire. The notice will contain the new, reappraised value of their homes. McGuire said the new appraisal, the first since 2019, will likely come as a shock to some, while others who are used to checking their property values on Zillow and Realtor.com may not be surprised.
“It will show the previous value and the current value,” said McGuire who used his own mobile home as an example. He said his property has gone from an assessed value of $62,400 to $167,000 in five years. That is a 167.63% increase in his mobile home value over a 5-year period.
McGuire said that average residential values went up 68.48 percent and commercial properties went up 26%. He said his office used 2300 qualified deeds to perform this reappraisal.
In addition to their regular weekly office hours of 8 am to 4:30 pm at the Historic Courthouse in Jonesborough, McGuire said his office will be open from 8 am-12 noon on Saturday, April 27, May 4 and May 11.
“We are making every effort to accommodate the citizens of Washington County, so they don’t have to take off work. If they have a question about their values and want to come in and talk with us, we will be glad to meet with them,” he said. Residents can make an appointment by calling 753-1670.
McGuire also recommended property owners call their insurance company to see what insurance value their home now has.
He said the elderly in Washington County with qualifying age and income thresholds, are eligible for tax relief through Washington County Trustee Rick Storey’s office.
