[ARCHIVED] Register of Deeds Warns Residents About Property Deed Scam Letters

Register of Deeds

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. (Sept. 18, 2025) – The Washington County Register of Deeds Office is advising property owners to exercise caution after receiving reports about fraudulent letters circulating in the county.

Several residents have received letters from an entity identifying itself as the “Clerk’s Property Office,” with a Nashville return address. The letters request an $89 payment in exchange for a copy of the recipient’s property deed. The documents contain property-specific information and are designed to appear official.

The Register of Deeds Office emphasizes that these letters are not affiliated with Washington County or any government agency.

“Property owners should be aware that our office provides copies of deeds directly and at a minimal cost,” said Register of Deeds Teresa Bowman. “There is no need to pay a third party for these records. We strongly encourage residents to contact our office with any questions before responding to such solicitations.”

Deeds may be obtained through the Washington County Register of Deeds Office for $0.25 per page, or $1 per page for certified copies. Residents with concerns or questions are urged to call the office at 423-753-1644.

The Washington County Register of Deeds Office is responsible for recording, preserving and providing access to public records related to real property transactions in Washington County. The office is committed to maintaining the integrity of the county’s land records while ensuring transparency and accessibility for all residents.
